ABSTRACT

Few would disagree that politics in many Western countries is fragmented and in a mess. We urgently need new ideas and approaches. In this chapter I suggest that we explore what psychology and the psychotherapies can offer as part of a general transformation of politics. In countries like the United States, Britain and Germany, politics is at a crossroads. Analysts and psychotherapists might ignore this and continue to focus on personal transformation, leaving politics to the professionals. Or we could try to transform self-concern into social and political concern, thereby transforming politics as we know it.
