ABSTRACT

In this chapter I wish to present a detailed case study of a single art therapy session with a man who had AIDS and was close to death. This patient, who I will call ‘Keith’, used our time together in a most extraordinary way. In my seven years of working in this field Keith’s particular use of art therapy remains unique and yet it illustrates some of the pertinent issues involved in working with people facing the final stages of their lives. I have chosen to describe this case not only because it portrays something of the patient’s experience but also because it clearly highlights significant difficulties and struggles within the therapist. It also suggests a valuable role for art at a time when a person is close to death.
