ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine some theoretical issues that arise in art psychotherapy groups. To do this we look at processes in a particular type of group, one that stands outside of a clinical setting, is for self-referred members and is usually the sole therapy in which members are involved. These groups attract a clientele most similar to the membership of groups which have been used by theoreticians to develop models of group psychotherapy. Because of these factors, theoretical issues particular to these groups being art therapy groups are perhaps more easily identifiable within them. However, we believe that these issues also have relevance to groups in other settings.
