ABSTRACT
Mauritius is a small island in the Indian Ocean situated about 500 miles east of Madagascar, 20° south of the equator. It has an area of 724 square miles and a rapidly expanding population currently approaching 800,000. Though now one of the most densely populated territories in the world the island remained uninhabited until comparatively recent times.
