ABSTRACT

the object of this paper is to extend the discussion initiated by Professor A. N. Tucker in his article ‘Systems of Tone-marking African Languages’ 1 by proposing a system, designed in the first place for Bemba (Guthrie’s M42a, Zambia), which makes a new use of some older conventions. The article is in two parts, the first introducing and discussing the proposed system, the second attempting to derive from it a conventionalized tonal orthography 2 suitable for textual use, both locally in Zambia and arguably also for academic purposes. It is possible that a similar system may be of value for some other African languages.
