ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a new Binding Theory based on N. Chomsky's minimalist principles, and suggests that this theory is empirically superior to the traditional Binding Theory. The theory of anaphoric binding, as first stated in Chomsky, requires revision on both conceptual and empirical grounds. In Romance, the distinction between objective and oblique positions is even more obvious. Thus, in many varieties of Romance such as standard French and Spanish, the obligatory reflexive form is by and large limited to the object clitics. Chomsky further claimed that corresponds to the nonidiomatic reading of take a picture, whereas corresponds to the idiomatic reading. As for the empirical facts, the languages studied generally show a high orientation, indicating checking in AGR-subset principle, or a low orientation, indicating checking in AGR-OP. If the small clause subject is in the accusative, as in, the predicate shows the accusative ending as well.
