ABSTRACT

Leadership is most often related to the more personalized facet of exerting power and/or influence. Leadership can be exerted either through power or influence media or rather, simultaneously through both. In the leadership literature, the source is the leader and the target is the follower or followers. Researchers of leadership also seem to ignore the discoveries achieved by their colleagues on social influence processes. In the case of leadership processes, the divorce from the social influence research can also be due to methodological reasons. The difference between position power and personal power is critical for the leadership process. The chapter describes the trade-offs between influence and power and the links that can be established between micro- and macroprocesses. One of the most comprehensive models of leadership linking macro- and micro- organizational levels was proposed by Katz and Kahn.
