ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a short description of Boston College's (BCs) history and culture to show the cultural changes in universities. It describes the work developing out of the experience of each school and across professions and disciplines. The chapter presents organizational model, offers some reflections on successes and failures, and provides thoughts about the future. Boston College's Jesuit identity is reflected in its commitment to the application of knowledge to solve human problems, and the preparation of students 'to serve others' in the tradition of Catholic social justice teaching. The profession of social work historically has been committed to serving the needs of children, youth, and families. Social-work students understood the critical role of family, community, and culture in children's school achievement and knew how to access non educational systems on behalf of children and families. Collaboration between the schools of Social Work and Education, both concerned with the lives of children and youth, seemed a natural.
