ABSTRACT

This chapter describes programming for the elderly in Denmark with a focus on illustrating treatment concepts using examples of occupational therapy in a nursing home. During the last three years mental stimulation used as a treatment for those who have both depression and senile dementia. The contact between the family and the older person is also important. Music stimulation is a method to activate persons suffering from mental disorders. It is important not only to create a relaxed atmosphere but also to create a climate conducive to motivation. Hearing is weakened with increasing age. High notes are difficult to hear and background noise can be distracting. Dance can be used for activation, retraining and maintenance of the body's functions as well as to give and receive feelings and touch in an acceptable manner after a structuralized pattern which is agreed upon. As in all treatment, respect for the individual is a condition for establishing positive contact.
