ABSTRACT

Some form of talking therapy has been present since the human sought help with personal problems. Talking therapy has gone through many stages, and its antecedents are deep in human history. Change was slow until psychotherapy was formalized a century ago. The greatest change came in the last half of the twentieth century. This chapter will review some of the important changes that have marked the development of psychotherapy, and the last section will contain some educated guesses about the future direction of this profession.
