ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses a larger set of our family of origin measures and their relationship to the independent measures of marital competence and psychological health and the various dependent measures of incorporation of the child into the family. An issue of theoretical importance is the relationship between family of origin factors and both psychological health and marital quality. When the focus is turned to the relationship between family of origin influences and marital quality, the theoretical positions are less compelling. Since the data regarding family of origin factors, psychological health, and marital competence were derived independently, the analyses exploring their relationships should provide useful insights into these important theoretical issues. The relationships between family of origin, psychological health, and marriage were next examined using multiple regression techniques. The data are important in suggesting that despite considerable overlap, family of origin influences operate independently of measures of psychological health and marital quality.
