ABSTRACT

One of the most fascinating areas studied in psychology is personality. Psychologists have generated a number of recognized formal theories of personality. Researchers continue to study the personality aspects of sports, but a consensus regarding the appropriate direction for research has been slow to evolve. Knowledge of personality type may also be helpful in matching an athlete or recreational sportsperson to a specific sport. Knowledge and understanding of a particular athlete’s traits and motivations could prove invaluable in prescribing more training and drills versus a period of rest. A review of the literature has to start with attempts to isolate psychological factors that can predict success in an athletic contest. W. P. Morgan noted personality tests can quantify variables that at best account for only about half the variance in performance between athletes.
