ABSTRACT

In an historical perspective, the author affirms the centrality of social group work theories, purposes, values, and ethics in the continuum of practice that leads from individual to community. She analyzes the dangers and critiques the mis-use, non-use, and under-use of group work methods. The large number of professional social workers now charged with leading groups without requisite training, and the potential of short circuiting process in very brief groups are cited as current risks. The wide variety of types of groups with which social workers are involved and the range of settings is “good news.”
