ABSTRACT

This paper examines recurrent and emerging effects of the intellectual and professional environments on group work education as well as structural issues which are directly related to social work education. Particular emphasis is placed on the need for recognition of the continuum of theoretical orientations in group work theory, and the importance of empowerment and social perspectives. These contributions need to be reaffirmed in social work. Educational standards are proposed that strengthen the teaching of group work within the generic social work curriculum.
