ABSTRACT
This paper describes sources of confusion and conflict in the practice and analysis of financial management in stepfamily households. Drawing on published reports and recent research, it examines divergent meanings of the concept of fairness. Understanding the beliefs and values about household finances and inheritance that guide remarried couples sheds light on the decisions they make and on the stresses they experience.
