ABSTRACT

Very few studies examined how divorce affects individuals’ relationships with their former in-laws. In this study the normative aspect of this relationship, the actual contact, and the nature of support obtained from former in-laws were explored. Data obtained through in-depth interviews indicated that the quantity and the quality of the interaction between former spouses and their former in-laws depended on the quality and quantity of this relationship before the separation/divorce. Respondents’ actual behavior was in agreement with their own norms but not with the perceived societal ones. The quality of the relationship established with in-laws during the marriage also affected asking and receiving support from former in-laws.
