ABSTRACT

Several studies have suggested that the Type A behavior pattern (TABP), characterized by aggressiveness, hostility, time urgency, and competitive ambition is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CD; Dembroski, Weiss, Shields, Hayes, & Feinleib, 1978;Rosenman et al., 1975;Wardwell & Bahnson, 1973;Zyzanski & Jenkins, 1970). Recently the focus has been on measuring the presumed coronary-prone components of this multifaceted behavior pattern, most notably the hostility-anger-aggression complex (e.g., Barefoot, Dahlstrom, & Williams, 1983; Dembroski, MacDougall, Williams, Haney, & Blumenthal, 1985; Matthews, Glass, Rosenman & Bortner, 1977).
