ABSTRACT

Latin America occupies a vast region of the American continent. It includes more than 20 countries and in area it is twice the size of Europe. Latin American countries by no means constitute a coherent unit. They differ in territorial extension – Brazil could hold within its expanse all the other countries in Latin American while El Salvador has a bare twenty thousand square kilometers. To acquire an overview of the development and dissemination of the Mutual Teaching Method (MTM) in Latin America a series of papers was prepared, using a timeline of three columns to register the information obtained. This resource has been used to summarize, analyze and organize historical events. During the 19th century, the use of the system spread throughout England, Europe and the United States. It also spread to the emerging Latin American republics. The first related event occurred when a delegation from Caracas traveled to London in 1810, seeking support from the British government.
