ABSTRACT

Sweden is strongly dependent on oil for its energy supply. While oil and gas account for more than half of the world’s energy supply, 70 per cent of Sweden’s energy demands are met by imported oil. Limited discoveries of new oil fields combined with difficulties in increasing the present oil production capacity indicate the presence of a risk of severe restrictions on the global oil production in 10–30 years. If people manage to show that a Solar Sweden is a distinct possibility without assuming changes in the type of society we have, then it should be even more feasible to build a Solar Sweden in a society which is more dedicated to conservation of resources. Solar cells will be used in various ways; some will be connected directly to their loads and some used for the production of methanol (in combination with biomass), as well as for seasonal storage of energy.
