ABSTRACT

The shortage of natural gas and oil resources as well as the global warming by CO2 emissions from fossil energies hit the developing countries particularly badly: they are especially vulnerable to the man-made increase of natural catastrophes and their emerging economies are depressed by the increasing prices of fossil energies. A comfortable room climate can be realized to a certain extent by means of architecture, i.e. building design, materials, and operation of natural ventilation and shading facilities. The efficiency of building services for auxiliary heating, cooling, air-conditioning and ventilation as well as lighting can be increased significantly by advanced solutions. The energy consumption for lighting is often underestimated. Many people do not bother, if the light is switched on throughout the whole day. Automatic control systems with daylight and presence sensors allow switching and/or dimming the artificial light whenever it is useful.
