ABSTRACT

This editorial introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses fluctuating wind power production as a function of time and of increasing size of energy storage. It also details the foundation options and shows that there are different candidates which appear optimal for different conditions of water depth and the nature of the ocean floor. The book utilizes a Markov chain model to analyse the performance of turbines with and without a gearbox, based on reliability data of individual components. It explores the direct-drive concept from a technical point of view, trying to construct an electric generator lighter than current ones and thus better suited for use at a height in wind turbines. The book looks at municipal solid waste with additional admixtures of manure. It gives an overview of the present status, both with regards to electricity and heat applications.
