ABSTRACT

Working memory concerns the temporary maintenance of information needed for other cognitive activities. Working memory typically maintains and updates information while this information is worked on to achieve other goals, such as solving a problem, drawing a conclusion, comprehending a text, etc. The specificity of working memory is that it must maintain information for direct access while attention is needed to process information for other purposes. Within working memory, a distinction is made between verbal and visuospatial working memory. Whereas verbal working memory operates on verbal representations, visuospatial working memory operates on visual and spatial representations.
