ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concept of a boundary spanning mindset using both theory and research. A boundary spanning mindset consists of a cognitive capacity to mobilize the interaction of groups to resolve wicked problems, and a motivation to improve intergroup interactions. It extends perspectives on social identity theory to describe the characteristics and consequences of a boundary spanning mindset. It also presents key elements of a boundary spanning mindset and how it differs from a bounded mindset. To better illustrate this mindset in action, it presents findings from a research project conducted in partnership with colleagues at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL). In contrast, interviewees who were effective boundary spanners displayed characteristics on both ends of each pair. A boundary spanning mindset is one that goes beyond simplistic solutions in creating a common 'we' identity and instead is attentive to intergroup differences to create an identity that values 'we' as well as 'me within we'.
