ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on authentic engagement in environments where individuals bring divergent sets of values into the workplace. Authenticity begins with an analysis of one's values, and is followed by the development of strategies for incorporating, versus shielding, the most important ones into work life. Recent positive identities work that provides pathways for enhancing authenticity is consistent with the direction of the chapter. An important facet of building authenticity begins with self-analysis. Coaching should squarely address the potential risks and benefits of enhancing one's authenticity at work. The chapter speaks to positive organizational scholarship with respect to the well-being of an organization's members and how that affects the organization as a whole. It also highlights that although there are numerous benefits to authenticity, how one incorporates one's core, non-negotiable values at work is a personal journey that involves discovering ways to honor those values.
