ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines an approach to teaching consultation on a professional training doctorate for educational and child psychologists in the United Kingdom (UK). It focuses on consultation knowledge to be shared with trainees, how they develop consultation competence over time and how they employ strategies to support capability. The chapter briefly considers various consultation models prevalent in the UK and then goes on to describe the University College London approach to consultation training. This includes a focus on consultation competencies and examples of teaching methods, protocols and processes for intervention planning and evaluation. The chapter also highlights how diverse elements of the curriculum need to be synthesized in order to support students' developing understandings of the integration between research, theory and practice when developing competence. Finally, it examines the concept of capability with particular emphasis on coaching, supervision, feedback and reflection in continuing professional and personal development.
