ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews Canadian consultation frameworks and applicable research. It describes a Canadian integrative model for comprehensive psychological services in multicultural education systems. Two examples of applications of the model are provided. The first describes multidisciplinary school teams that engage in a consulting role. The second describes online resources as aids for consultative processes in schools and other settings. It also provides a continuum for divergent direct and indirect services based on theoretical and empirical studies within the consultation literature. As education systems become more complex and demands for increased accountability grow, psychologists need to work with educators to help them understand that school psychology is a dynamic profession that can make significant contributions to the development of school communities that provide optimal support of students. The chapter concludes with implications for preservice instruction for future practitioners and in-service training for school psychologists seeking to broaden their knowledge and experience in consultative services in education.
