ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on concepts discussed in this book. The book has discussed the developing relationship between the police and academics and the flourishing relationships that seem to be presently occurring in England and Wales particularly between Universities and the College of Policing. Much has been written so far about the current landscape of police research and in what ways it can inform policy. The dilemmas and experiences that police researchers face in occupying the police world and capturing its complex and ever changing nature. Police research has developed over a long time and as with other areas of Criminology it may seem that we have already answered a large number of the critical questions. The history of policing research and Squires suggests early police researchers favoured more ethnographic or qualitative approaches, changing priorities and political context and the emerging field of crime science meant more quantitative or scientific methods were prioritised.
