ABSTRACT

The main research question of this chapter is to undertake a simple test to determine which of the varieties of capitalism (VOC) approaches, the dichotomous approach or approaches that involve more than two varieties of capitalism fits with training patterns. It also brings together the findings of four consecutive waves of the Cranet survey which were carried out in 1991, 1995, 1999-2000 and 2004-05. The chapter analyses consecutive waves will shed further light on whether the varieties of capitalism across Europe are in the process of converging. It also investigates whether extensive cross-country survey data confirm the predictions of the VOC literature as to the trans-national differences in the provision of government education as well as firm-level training for employees. The taxonomy of corporate governance systems that has been the most prescriptive in terms of cross-national differences in investments in human capital is the VOC literature.
