ABSTRACT
This article proposes to investigate the role played by material goods in the transnational experience. Previous research has shown that the movement of people across the world comes with a corollary of cultural flows which find their expression in multiple ways. This article looks more specifically at the kind of commodities that international students bring from home when living in the UK. Informed by interdisciplinary research, it reports on a quantitative study with some qualitative elements investigating the motivation for bringing specific goods, and the nature of those goods. It also looks at the issue of authenticity of provision for the sample by interrogating the importance of the locating process.
Cet article se propose d’examiner le rôle que jouent les biens matériels dans l’expérience transnationale. D’autres recherches ont préalablement démontré que les déplacements humainsà travers le monde s’accompagnent de mouvements culturels qui se révèlent de façons multiples. Cet article se penche plus particulièrement sur le type de biens que lesétudiants venus de l’étranger apportent de chez eux lorsqu’ils viennent résider au Royaume-Uni. Sous-tendu par des recherches interdisciplinaires, il faitétat d’uneétude quantitativeétayée par deséléments de recherche qualitative qui examine ce qui motive cesétudiants à sélectionner età transporter certains biens spécifiques ainsi que la nature de ces objets. L’article se pencheégalement sur la question d’authenticité en interrogeant l’importance du processus de localisation des objets sélectionnés.
