ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to organize information and knowledge on indigenous plants that are used for various purposes in the Cordillera Administrative Region of the Philippines, by applying bioinformatics through the development of a database information system. The following uses for indigenous plants were identified: organic farming; sustainable indigenous farming; food and food supplements; cultural practices; construction and livelihood; ornamentals, gardening and landscaping; and community healthcare. The database information system, was developed as a framework to organize the documentation of indigenous plants used for different purposes in the Cordillera Administrative Region. Almost all of the indigenous plant species identified in this chapter are used as ornamental plants for decorating home gardens. It is envisaged that the data information system will serve as an important knowledge base in future efforts to preserve and manage indigenous-plant resources and to tackle the issues of poverty alleviation, degradation of environmental resources and food security for upland communities in the Philippines.
