ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the role of law and regulation in sustaining financial markets in both developed and developing countries, particularly the European Union (EU), the United States (US), and China, from a law and economics perspective. It contributes to the law and finance literature by studying certain conventional issues, such as the relationship between finance and economic growth, the effects of regulatory quality on financial development, and so forth, from new perspectives and/or with new evidence, data, and cases. The book explores some novel topics, such as project finance contracts, insurance and climate change, the shadow banking system, and others, that have been overlooked to some extent in the existing literature. It is the second volume in a series of books that originate from a longstanding cooperation between various Chinese and European institutions.
