ABSTRACT

Internationalization in European higher education has rapidly expanded over the last decade which has led to the development of funding opportunities for the exchange and collaboration of teachers and scientists at both institutional and policy levels (European University Association, 2013). Teachers and researchers in higher education travel abroad for less than one year to contribute to the wider research activities of their department or institution. This form of tourism demand, termed academic tourism, is comprised of individuals – typically professors employed at universities, as well as lecturers and scientific assistants active in teaching – who travel abroad to pursue their academic activities and develop skills specific to their career path.
