ABSTRACT
Football in Argentina was first organized and established in 1891 by a group of headmasters who were part of a network of British schools. During the first decade of the twentieth century the organization began to adapt to the local culture. By the 1920s football was common among the youth of the majority of social groups and tens of thousands of spectators attended competitive football matches. Given its popularity, football players became paid professionals in 1931.
