ABSTRACT

In April 2015 the Caribbean island of Grenada, located north-east of continental South America, hosted a cricket test match between the West Indies and England. The Grenadian government paid approximately US$500,000 to the West Indies Cricket Board to host the match in order to boost the profile of the nation within the Caribbean and induce tourism spending from the sizeable number of England cricket supporters who had followed their team to the island. The stadium in which the match was played was built for the 2007 Cricket World Cup and has a capacity of 20,000 on an island with a population of approximately 110,000. Interestingly, the venue was funded by the Chinese government, a nation not known for its interest in cricket.
