ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on one of the least explored topics in the sport management literature: Latin American women and leadership in sports. Throughout history there have been a great number of women leaders in Latin America. Recently, advances in women’s participation related to policy- and decision-making in all sectors of society in Latin America has been noted (UN, 2011, 2014). However, further research is needed with respect to women and leadership in sport. The advancements in policies mentioned above are related to increased participation of women in public politics, gender quotas for positions in parliaments, greater access to education, the creation of ministerial offices for women’s advancement and /or gender equity, and modification of existing laws to include considerations of gender equity among others (Franceschet, 2005; UN, 2010, Valdivieso, 2014, Yepes, 2007). Many of these initiatives have been the product of international strategies approved by organizations such as the United Nations (UN), which will be explored later in this chapter.
