ABSTRACT

Globalization brings its own diversity in race and ethnicity, national origins, religion, and language. The challenge is that the increasing diversity brought by international students and faculty coming to institutions outside of their home countries is often considered interchangeable with the diversity in access and hiring for domestic groups. In the United Kingdom (UK) and United States (USA) for example, international hiring has led to increased numbers of Black faculty who may be from Africa, not from the USA or the UK. More significantly, the national origin of those who bring a global perspective may also bring a privileged perspective from their country of origin. Globalization and immigration also highlight the very important sociopolitical significance of diversity and identities. The salience of group identity can challenge the development of coherent national identities and puts countries and institutions on notice that addressing diversity and identity effectively will become more not less important for institutions and society.
