ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explores that the topic of diversity and institutional transformation will only grow in its significance. Higher education is increasing in its importance around the world, and institutions find themselves grappling with the salient identities that are found locally. This is true in the Middle East, Europe, India, Latin America, and throughout Africa. Building equitable institutions that contribute to the creation of healthy pluralistic societies, that address social inequities, that address historic grievances, and that can create the knowledge base necessary for the next era will become more important than it has ever been. The book presents that there are common themes that emerge for these special-purpose institutions that can be quite instructive. Diversity efforts are becoming more explicitly inclusive of salient identities in the society. It finally suggests that the movement towards institutional transformation and diversity is inevitable.
