ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses some current issues and approaches in Maya pottery studies and, especially, how these relate to the work of E. Wyllys Andrews V. The chapter goals to trace out the stylistic connections between Fine Orange pottery and the ceramics of Lamanai using the concept of ceramic systems to show its potential for mapping stylistic interaction across large areas. Fine Orange Ware types are among the best known of Maya ceramics, and much of the pottery of the Terminal Classic and the Postclassic periods appears to imitate them. Much of the orange-red slipped Buk-phase pottery found in burials and caches at Lamanai can be classified as belonging to the Zakpah Group. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the rarely used concept of the ceramic system in reference to the Terminal Classic and Postclassic pottery of Lamanai, Belize.
