ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a preliminary typological analysis of the early Middle Preclassic K'awil ceramic phase at Holmul and try to place it within the context of contemporaneous pottery traditions. The complex contains pottery similar to that from Cahal Pech in Belize; Tikal, Altar de Sacrificios, and Seibal in Guatemala; and Komchen and Kiuic in Yucatan, Mexico. The chapter is inspired by a 1990 study by Will Andrews and has benefited from his guidance throughout. It discusses of early pottery in the Maya lowlands. The chapter considers excavations at Group II, Holmul, and my analysis of the pottery found there and compares this material to that found at other sites in the Maya region. It examines collections of contemporaneous material from Cahal Pech, Belize, and from Seibal, Guatemala, housed at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard Universit.
