ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the transformation of borderlines in the Greater China region, defined as the socioeconomic region of China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, in which China has emerged as a super power in the world economy in recent years. It uses the contesting concepts of borderlines or boundaries to explore the transformation of social, economic and identity issues in the Greater China area, especially concerning the Taiwanese side. More precisely, if most existing publications in the Greater China region are by and large concerned with high-level politics and the macro-economy, the book focuses on the micro levels of cross-border production, the daily routines of community life, as well as identity formation and transformation due to the increasing social interactions across borders.
