ABSTRACT

There were few Arab musicians within the Arab communities following the establishment of the State of Israel, though some musical activities occurred from time to time. In the 1950s an important role was played by immigrant musicians from Iraq, and in the 1960s by those who arrived from Egypt. In the following decades improvements in education and the opening of the Arab music department at the Rubin Conservatory in Haifa produced a new generation of musicians. A renaissance was experienced in schools, clubs, and cultural and community centres throughout the country and music activities flourished; festivals were held and there were radio and TV programmes.
