ABSTRACT

Spring is a fine example of the reverdie, the song inspired by the return of spring. The combination of rhyme and alliteration is particularly striking, though sound sometimes overwhelms sense. Line 20 is especially difficult. Perhaps it should read, Meles meres with hüere makes, ‘Mares murmur with their mates,’ but it seems unlikely that the Harley scribe understood what he was writing at this point.
