ABSTRACT
The following spirited love lyric from the Harley Miscellany serves as a useful reminder of the multilingual and cosmopolitan culture of the fourteenth century. It is written in perfectly rhymed macaronic stanzas that move effortlessly between Latin and Anglo-Norman and conclude dramatically in English. The reference to the lover’s lodging in Paris suggests that he is an English student abroad; and the dialect form sügge ‘say’ (1. 19) may indicate that he belongs to the Southwestern area of England, but all the Harley lyrics are recorded in the same dialect.
