The Parliament of the Three Ages

The Parliament (that is, ‘Discussion’) employs two medieval conventions, the dream framework and the debate format, the latter comparable to The Owl and the Nightingale (p. 54, above). The closest analogues are to be found in a series of medieval French poems on ‘The Three Dead Men and the Three Living Men,’ a theme often represented in medieval paintings and illumination.
