ABSTRACT

Little is known definitely about the life of John Gower (ca. 1330–1408). He was reared in Kent, came of a well-connected family, became active in real estate, probably served in the Court of Chancery, and lived in St. Mary Overeys Priory, at Southwark. He was married, apparently for the first time, in 1398. A friend of Chaucer, he was supported in turn by Richard II and Henry IV.
