ABSTRACT

John Wyclyf (ca. 1320–84) collaborated with his Lollard followers in preparing an English translation of the Bible (completed ca. 1390) for the benefit of laymen unfamiliar with Latin. John Purvey (ca. 1354–ca. 1428), along with others, produced a later, improved version (ca. 1395) of this pioneering work shortly after Wyclyf’s death.
