ABSTRACT

As Dr. Hofferth noted in her chapter, there are two major components of the demand for early childhood services in the United States: (a) the employment of mothers with young children outside the home and (b) parents' desires to enhance the development of their young children by enrolling them in early childhood education programs. Also, the findings Dr. Hofferth reported regarding the supply of early childhood services in the United States provide information about two types of early childhood settings: care-oriented settings and educational settings.
