History of Child Care in the United States Before 1950

Despite the increasing debates over care of young children in the United States today, surprisingly little effort has been made to place these issues in a broader historical context. It is commonly assumed that parents have always been responsible for the care of their own young children and the current efforts to delegate some of that responsibility to day-care centers or nursery schools are unusual if not “unnatural.”
