ABSTRACT

Day care for infants and children in the People’s Republic of China is an extremely complex matter, particularly when seen from a Western perspective. The People’s Republic of China is a communist/socialist republic, so many of its day-care policies are imposed by party leadership from the top down. In addition, many of the functional guidelines for day care are linked closely with the political tide of the times. Thus, it would be difficult to understand China’s day care outside the context of its political structures and decision-making process. It is also important to recognize that because China is geographically vast, and culturally and linguistically complex, its day care is not uniform.
