ABSTRACT

This chapter has three main objectives such as to open avenues for adolescent spiritual growth and self-definition, to promote healthy spiritual connections at the adolescent's developmental level, to utilize technology as a metaphor to promote adolescent spiritual dialogue. Technology is an integral part of the American teen culture. Cell phones, the Internet, instant messenger, and e-mail have significantly impacted the adolescent's world of communication. Therefore, the application of technology as a metaphor for spiritual connection can aid in the therapeutic process. Finding an avenue to address adolescent spirituality can be very challenging in the context of therapy. For example: a seventeen-year-old male presents with multifaceted issues surrounding peer relationships, self-esteem, and frustration communicating with God. Once the spiritual concern is presented or identified, the therapist can introduce the idea of communication with God or a Higher Power by using a metaphor associated with technology.
